" Designed Survivor " ( English Designated Survivor ; other names: The Last Candidate and Assigned to Survive ) is an American television series created by David Guggenheim with Kiefer Sutherland in the lead role, which started on ABC in the 2016–2017 season . In the center of the plot is the non-influential member of the government, Thomas Kirkman, who was “ appointed to survive, ” who, after the death of the president and his main successors, replaces the post of president of the United States .

On May 11, 2017, ABC extended the series for a second season, [2] which premiered on September 27, 2017.
On May 11, 2018, the series was closed after the second season, and on September 8, 2018, Kiefer Sutherland announced that the third season would be released on Netflix [3] .
On April 24, 2019, the official Twitter account announced the release of the third season on June 7, 2019 on Netflix.

Production
Development
On December 14, 2015, it was announced that ABC had ordered the series from Mark Gordon’s studio with Kiefer Sutherland in the lead role, bypassing the pilot’s production stage, since the project was claimed by several networks [4] . The project was described as a political thriller with elements of family drama. The script was written by David Guggenheim, and Simon Kinberg took the place of one of the executive producers. For Gordon and his independent studio, the Mark Gordon Company, this is the first project under a general deal with Entertainment One. Sutherland, in turn, is also the executive producer of the show. In February 2016, Amy B. Harris, who came to this place under her general deal with ABC Studios , took the post of a showrunner in February 2016, after her previous project “ Angry City ” failed [6] .
Casting
On February 5, 2016, it was announced that four actors were immediately hired for the main roles. Maggie Q was invited to take on the role of FBI lead agent, Cal Penn - speech writer , Italy Ricci - Head of Presidential Administration , and Natasha Makelhon took on the role of first lady , who also works on the equal employment opportunity commission [7] . On February 8, Adan Kanto , rejecting seven other proposals for shooting pilots, joined the project in the role of deputy chief of staff of the White House [8] . On March 1, Lamonic Garrett was given the role of a secret service officer [9] . The next day, Tanner Buchanan and McKenna Grace received the roles of the children of the president [10] .
