History
Initially, the theater was planned to be called the “Central” ( English The Central Theater ), but after a long debate, it was decided to give it the name “Queen's Theater”, and in its foyer to place a portrait of Alexandra Danish [1] .
The first production on the stage of the theater was the comedy "Sugar Bowl" by Madeleine Lusetta. However, the performance was poorly received by the public: only 36 performances were played. The theater itself received rave reviews. For example, The Stage wrote the following [2] :
The two-level building of the Queen accommodates about 1,200 people, which in money is approximately 300 pounds . Walls and roofs are in white and gold, carpets and upholstery are in green, and the curtain is from charming velvet. The lobby is very spacious and has a high entrance leading to the ground; one beautiful marble staircase a staircase ascends to the mezzanine; and at the very top there is a beautiful spacious lounge. The auditorium is pleasantly lit by electric lamps and a chandelier.
In subsequent years, on the stage of the theater, spectators could watch such famous talents as: Peggy Ashcroft , Fred and Adele Astaire , Tallulah Bankhead , Kenneth Bran , Henry Daniel , Noel Kaurd , Marlene Dietrich , John Gilgud , Fairbanks Douglas (Jr.) , Edith Evans , Robert Donat , Cedric Hardwick , Jack Hawkins , Nigel Hawthorne and many others.
In September 1940, a German bomb hit the theater directly, destroying the facade and lobby. At this time, the play “Rebecca” by Daphne Dumurier was taking place . In the next twenty years, the theater was closed. Recovery was handled by Westwood Sons & Partners, having spent £ 250,000. The decor of the auditorium was preserved according to the original idea, but the rest of the premises and the facade of the building were given a modern look. The reconstructed theater opened on July 8, 1959 with a solo performance by John Gilgud . His program "The Age of Man " consisted of Shakespeare's speeches and sonnets [1] .
In June 1972, the theater building was inscribed on the English Heritage List [3] .
Since April 2004, Koroleva has become the venue for the musical Les Miserables , which moved here from the neighboring Palace Theater . On October 8, 2005, the production celebrated the 20th anniversary of rental in the West End, and a year later became the longest show in the history of the West End, breaking the record of the past leader - the musical “ Cats ” [4] .
