Orlov, Vasily Mikhailovich

Vasily Mikhailovich Orlov ( 13 [25] January 1858 , Ilinskoe, now Moscow Region - 6 [19] April 1901 , Petersburg ) - Russian composer, choral conductor, music theorist, collector of folk songs.

Biography

Born in the village Ilinskoe (now Moscow region ) [2] . He studied at the Moscow Synodal School and at the Moscow Conservatory in the oboe class (he studied music theory from P. I. Tchaikovsky ); course not graduated. He taught singing at the Ostrog Teacher Seminary [2] [3] [4] .

Then he studied at the St. Petersburg Conservatory under N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov . For 10 years (1884–1893) he lived and worked in the Tambov province [5] , led the choir of Count Stroganov. From 1893 he led the choir of the Kazan Cathedral in St. Petersburg [2] [3] [4] .

He died in Petersburg on April 6 (19), 1901 [2] .

Creativity

Author of children's operas (“Fox and Grapes”, 1895; “Pig Under the Oak”, 1895; “The Bullfinch and Swallow”, 1895; “The Crow of a Duck", 1895; "Snow Maiden", 1895), choirs, spiritual compositions, romances [3 ] [6] .

In 1880, in the Tambov province, he recorded 193 choral songs in a 2-voice presentation, which he arranged for 4 votes, while retaining the peculiarities of the people's stock. 18 of these songs were published in 1890 by A.I. Palchikov [2] [3] [4] , another 58 were released by Muzgiz in the years 1949-1950.

He also wrote “The Art of Church Singing” and “Regent tables for setting tones ...” [3] [4] [6] .
