Martin PBM Mariner

Martin "Mariner" , Martin 162 ( English Martin Mariner ) - a type of twin-engine flying boat , designed by order of the US Navy as a bomber , anti-submarine and rescue aircraft. It was created under the guidance of the aviation designer, an emigrant from Russia, Mikhail Vatter, to replace the Consolidated PBY Catalina flying boat. It was a twin-engined flying boat with a large free-flowing gull-type wing. The surface of the wing and tail had no external power elements (as in many other flying boats), which greatly increased the aerodynamic properties of the aircraft. For a twin-engine piston-engined aircraft, Mariner was a real giant — with a deep fuselage and a wingspan of 36 meters, it easily overshadowed four-engine bombers (the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress had a wingspan of 4.5 meters less).

In other countries, was in service until the 60s.

Major modifications

  • HRVM-1 - a prototype with a gull-type cantilever wing, with retractable floats under the wing.
  • RVM-1 - the initial production version, different horizontal tail with a pronounced angle V, two keels; built 20 aircraft.
  • HRVM-1A - the designation of the HRVM-1 aircraft with other weapons.
  • HRVM-2 is the only sample similar to the PBM-1, but with an increased fuel reserve and adapted for launch from a catapult .
  • RVM-3B - version RVM-3, transferred to the Royal Air Force of Great Britain; This is the first production model RVM-3, which used larger non-retractable floats; RVM-3V equipped with engines R-2600-12 with 1700 hp each.
  • RVM-3S is a production model, generally similar to RVM-3B; differences - body armor, bomb load up to 1814 kg and changes in weapons; built 742 aircraft.
  • RVM-3D - like RVM-3S, a serial model, but with a more powerful R-2600-22 engine, with a search radar, with retrofit fuel tanks , with the possibility of placing up to 3628 kg of bombs, two torpedoes; built 201 aircraft.
  • HRVM-3E - the designation of one aircraft RVM-3, designed for testing radar.
  • RVM-3R - transport version of the aircraft RVM-3, without weapons, with a cargo door, floor reinforced; built 50 aircraft.
  • RVM-3S - anti-submarine model version RVM-3C with an additional supply of fuel; could carry four depth charges of 147 kg each; built 156 aircraft.
  • HRMV-5 - two prototype aircraft, similar to the RVM-3D, but with Pratt & Whitney R-2800-34 Double Wasp engines with a capacity of 2100 hp each.

Martin "Mariner" PBM-5.
  • RVM-5 - the main production model, in general, similar to the HRVM-5, but with motors R-2800-22 or 34; built 631 aircraft.
  • HRVM-5A - the only sample version of the RVM-5 amphibian . The model received a retractable three-post chassis.
  • RVM-5A - the serial version HRVM-5A; used mainly by the US Coast Guard for maritime search and rescue operations; built 36 aircraft.
  • RVM-5E - RVM-5 aircraft with radar AN / APS-15.
  • RVM-5G - a new designation for four aircraft RVM-5, transferred to the US Coast Guard for search and rescue service.
  • RVM-5M - a new designation of one of the aircraft RVM-5E, converted to test missiles.
  • RVM-5S - designation of a small series of aircraft RVM-5 with equipment for anti-submarine operations.

In 1940–1941, the experienced Mars giant seaplane was built on the basis of an enlarged PBM design; Two of the five serial samples continue the fire service to this day (January 2008).
