Baron Dunboyne

Baron Dunboyne is a hereditary title in the Irish Peer system . The title comes from the city of Dunboyne in County Meath . Some time after the Norman invasion of Ireland, the title of Baron Dunboyne passed to the Petit family. The Petit family also owned land in Mullingar . In 1227, Ralph Petit became Bishop of Meath. In this capacity, he founded the Priory of the Most Holy Theotokos in Mullingar . A century later, Thomas Butler (d. 1329 ), the son of Theobald Butler, Ireland's 4th chief butler, married Sinold, daughter and heiress of William Le Petit , Lord Chief Justice of Ireland. In 1324, Butler received the title of Baron Dunboyne. In 1541, the title of Baron Dunboyne was elevated to the rank of peer of Ireland .
