The species is common in tropical and subtropical waters of the western Atlantic Ocean from the coast of New England and Nova Scotia along the Caribbean and Bermuda , in the Gulf of Mexico to Uruguay . Off the coast of the Greater Antilles is rare.
The body of the fish is high, highly compressed laterally. A characteristic feature is a large head with a steep profile and low mouth. The eyes are located at the same distance from the mouth and top of the head. The first rays of the dorsal and anal fins are very elongated, but not filiform, but connected by a fin membrane. The ventral fins are very small. The body length is usually 35 cm, the maximum length is 47 cm. The body color is silver, the guanine dye contained in the skin reflects the light in such a way that all possible rainbow reflections occur with incident side light.
Selena lives in shallow water at a depth of one to 60 meters above solid or sandy soil. Young individuals are also found in river mouths. Fish live in small groups or pairs and feed on small crabs , shrimps , small fish and worms.
