Stacey Kent ( born March 27, 1968, South Orange , NJ ) is an American jazz singer nominated for a Grammy Award [1] .

Biography

Kent attended Newark Academy in Livingston . [2] She was educated at Sarah Lawrence College in New York , and moved to England after graduation. While studying at the Guildhall School of Music and Theater in London , she met with tenor and saxophonist Jim Tomlinson, whom she married on August 9, 1991.

In the early 90s, Kent began her professional singing career at the Café Boheme in Soho . After 2-3 years, Kent begins to open as a jazz singer at Ronnie Scott's club in London.

Her first album, “Close Your Eyes,” was released in 1997. She released nine more albums and single songs on Tomlinson’s three albums, the latest album “The Lyric” (2006), which won “Album of the Year” in 2006 at the BBC Jazz Awards and was reissued at Blue Note Records in 2011.

Kent's music has been criticized by jazz trumpeter Humphrey Lyttelton. In 2001, she won the British Jazz Award, and in 2002 at the BBC Jazz Award received the award for "Best Vocalist." She also presents jazz programs on BBC Radio 2 and BBC Radio 3 .

In 2006, Tomlinson, before receiving an award at the BBC Jazz Awards in the Album of the Year nomination for The Lyric, announced that Kent was working with Blue Note Records .

Kent's album “The Boy Next Door” reached Gold album status in France in September 2006. Breakfast On The Morning Tram (2007) reached Platinum album status in France in November 2007; Gold album status in Germany in February 2008.

In 2009 she was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Album

In 1995, Kent appeared in the movie version of Richard III by Ian McKellen , performing a jazz version of Christopher Marlowe 's The Passionate Shepherd to His Love poem.

Booker Prize winner writer Kazuo Ishiguro wrote notes for the 2003 Kent album album In Love Again. Ishiguro co-authored four songs on Breakfast on the Morning Tram, which was released in the fall of 2007, Blue Note Records . One of Isiguro’s songs, “The Ice Hotel,” featuring music from Tomlinson, won first prize at the International Songwriting Competition in April 2008.

March 31, 2009, Kent received the National Order of Arts and Letters (Order of Arts and Letters) - a state award, as a sign of recognition of her contribution to art, from the Minister of Culture of France Cristina Albanelle.

Kent's 2010 album, "Raconte-moi ...", was recorded entirely in French, and was a commercial success in France and Germany, reaching Gold album status.

Kent's first live album, “Dreamer In Concert,” was released in 2011. It was recorded May 30-31, 2011 at the La Cigale Theater in Paris . The album includes three previously unrecorded songs: “Waters of March” by Antonio Carlos ac jobim, and two new songs by Jimm Tomlinson: “Postcard Lovers”, with lyrics by writer Kazuo Isiguro and “O Comboio”, written by Portuguese poet António Ladeira.
