Clairvoyance

Clairvoyance ( Clairvoyance ) - a book by Charles Leadbeater , a member of the Theosophical Society ; first published in 1899 in London [1] . It is a study of the ability of some people to see that which is not invisible by official science [2] . The book was primarily intended to interest readers who were convinced of the existence of clairvoyance and who were familiar with theosophical terminology. Leadbeater argued that “the ability to see what is hidden from ordinary physical vision” [3] [4] is an extension of normal perception, and described a wide range of phenomena: intentional and unintentional clairvoyance, the ability to “see” the past, future, and other phenomena. About Development Methods

Leadbeater wrote about the achievement of control over thinking and the need for the ability to “concentrate your thought”:

Let a person schedule for himself every day a certain time when he can count on being left alone and no one will disturb him, and set himself up for this time so that his mind is completely free from all earthly thoughts for several minutes. no matter what kind, and when this can be achieved, let him direct all the power of his being to the highest spiritual ideal that he knows. He will see that achieving such complete control over his thoughts is incomparably more difficult than he suggests. But if he achieves this, it will be extremely beneficial for him in all respects, and as he more and more elevates and focuses his thought, he will gradually see that new worlds will begin to unfold before him. [K 3] [K 4]

Radhakrishnan wrote that a person who is committed to such principles of yoga as developing the ability to concentrate, subjugate "the vagaries of the mind", fix his attention on the internal sources of power - can control his "soul" in the same way that an athlete controls his body. Through alteration of the mental organization, yoga will allow him to achieve a "higher level of consciousness", which is beyond the limits set for the average person. [11] Higher abilities , thanks to which the yogi "can see and hear at a distance, appear as a result of concentration" [12] .
According to Buddhist philosophy , such a “miraculous ability” as “divine vision” is achieved through meditation and “wisdom”. [13] [K 5]

In the period from 1884 to 1888, Leadbeater went through a course of meditative practice, which "aroused clairvoyance in him." [7] [14] In his recollections of Adyar, Leadbeater said that once the Mahatma Kut Khumi suggested that he switch to a certain type of meditation associated with “the development of a mysterious force called kundalini ” [15] [K 6] [17] . After that, he “systematically and, one might even say, intensively” began to work on this type of meditation:

I worked on this for forty-two days, and it seemed to me that I was on the verge of a final victory, when Teacher himself intervened and made a final breakthrough, which completed the process, thereby allowing me to use astral vision, while maintaining full consciousness in the physical the body. [K 7] [K 8] [K 9]

Vision through a thoughtform

The author claims that if a person “thinks energetically” about himself as being in a remote place, he will create a thought form that copies himself, and it will appear in this place. The “consciousness of the thinker” will not be embodied in this thought form, that is, it will be a “completely separate thing”, but connected with its “creator”. He writes further that this type of clairvoyance consists in the ability to control the created thought form, to keep in touch with it and to receive visual information with its help. The impressions made on the form will be transmitted to its creator with the help of “sympathetic vibrations”. In the ideal case, the clairvoyant “as if sends a part of his consciousness” in the form of a thought form and uses it, like a “outpost” from which to observe. He sees almost as well as he could see if he himself were in the place of his thought form. Moreover, he can, if necessary, change the point of his observation. [K 10]

Possible use

"Vision" of music: a play by Charles Gounod .

Speaking about the possible use of “clairvoyance in time” [K 11] [K 12] , Leadbeater noted that “brilliant prospects” open up to the historian who is fluent in “this ability”:

Before him is an excitingly interesting field for historical research. He can not only, if he wants, reconsider the whole story with which we are familiar, correcting in this investigation many errors and incorrect ideas that crept into the descriptions of events that have reached us; he can also, if he wishes, trace the whole story from the very beginning. [K 13] [K 14]

According to Leadbeater (in the chapter on “complete simple” clairvoyance), an occult clairvoyant can “see” the smallest particles of matter, for example, a molecule or atom, “increasing” them “as if with a microscope”. The ability to such an “increase” was included in the list of powers ( siddhis ) of great yogis: it was believed that they can see very small objects. [23] [K 15]

Criticism

C. Leadbeater wrote a book based on the "pseudoscientific" concept of extrasensory perception . [25] Priest D. Druzhinin ( Moscow Patriarchate ) wrote that “delusional psychometric visions” and other manifestations of psychosomatic disorders make it possible to qualify the opening of the chakras and the awakening of the kundalini as the development of a “terrible mental illness”. And further: “Exploring Theosophy, we have already guessed many times: who else could create such a confused, contradictory, fantastical doctrine and mentally pathological practice? Only the mentally ill! ” [26] [K 16]

Reprints and translations

1914 edition

The book has been reprinted several times, mainly in European languages. [28] [K 17]
M. Stanyukovich was translated into Russian. This translation was published in Nos. 1–11 of the journal The Bulletin of Theosophy in 1913. [30] It was published as a separate publication in St. Petersburg in 1914. [28]

Interesting Facts

  • American writer Karen Brown used a quote from Leadbeater’s book as the epigraph for her novel “The Clairvoyants”:

"And he will find that they can be divided into two large classes: those whom we call alive, and those who are infinitely more alive, whom we so recklessly and mistakenly call dead." [K 18]
