Biography
Albert Irwin was born on August 21, 1922 in London . During World War II, the family was evacuated. Irwin attended Northampton School of the Arts from 1940 to 1941. Then he was drafted into the Royal Air Force as a navigator. When the war ended, he continued his studies at Goldsmiths College . Here he studied from 1946 to 1950, and then taught from 1962 to 1983.
In 1975, Irwin was awarded the Arts Council Prize, and in 1983, the Gulbenkian Prize for his engravings.
Irwin's work has been widely exhibited at exhibitions in the UK and abroad - at the British Council for the Arts, at the Birmingham City Art Gallery, at the Chase Manhattan Bank, at the Gallery of the Modern Art Society, at the Manchester Art Gallery , at the Tate Gallery , at the Victoria Museum and Alberta and the Center for the Arts of the University of Warwick [5] .
The artist's work was influenced by the work of Walter Sickert , Henri Matisse , William Turner , Jack Smith and Edward Middleditch [6] .
The artist experimented a lot, painting with different colors - from oil to acrylic, doing lithography, graphics, silk-screen printing, etc. In his works, he tried to convey the truth about the world without depicting things, and to understand whether it was possible to depict reality without resorting to imitation. Abstract painting attracted him, as it was a pure impression that did not need interpretation [7] .
Died March 26, 2015.
