Biography
Early life
Born in Cincinnati and was the eldest of three children. The family moved to California when he was 3 years old, and in his school years he moved to Pennsylvania [1] .
Career
Mangold began his career in aviation in 1974 as a paratrooper while studying at the US Air Force Academy . He continued his studies in 1977 , but already as a fighter pilot, graduating from the academy the following year. He became the best graduate of the school " Top Gun " in 1983.
During his military career, Mike served in the Pacific and continental states , training in the use of conventional, high-precision and atomic weapons, as well as interception missions on the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II , including the anti-radar option F-4G Wild Weasel V. He flew in Phantoms in the ranks of the US Air Force for about 10 years [2] .
After leaving military service in 1989, he became a commercial pilot at US Airways and American Airlines , piloting various aircraft models, including the Boeing 757 and Boeing 767 [2] [3] .
Although Mangold became a professional pilot, he continued to parachute jumps (more than 5,000 jumps). He was a member of the American national parachuting team from 1981 to 1985 and won several national awards as a paratrooper, and also participated in a record formation in Anapa , Russia in 1996 as one of 297 paratroopers [4] [5] .
Mangold began his career in aerobatics and aerobatics in 1990, winning the American Champion Decathlon .
He continued to win medals at the American Aerobatics Championship and also received a prize from the International Aerobatic Club in 2002 as the most successful pilot of the year [2] .
He participated in the Red Bull Air Race air races from 2004 to 2009, having won this championship in the 2005 and 2007 seasons [3] .
In 2010, Mangold withdrew from participating in Red Bull races, becoming a coach for newcomers to the race, as well as commenting on the air race, including for Fox Sports [4] [6] . For four years he was president of the board of directors of the International Jets aerobatic team, chairman of Reno Air Races until 2013. Mangold was on the board of directors of the Classic Jet Aircraft Association [4] [7] .
Death
Mangold died on December 6, 2015 in a plane crash. His Aero L-39 Albatross crashed and exploded shortly after taking off at about 2:20 pm from Apple Valley, California , killing Mangold and another person on board [1] [5] .
He left behind wife of Julie, also an aerobatics pilot, and two children, Nick and Melissa.
