Biography

Konrad Langenbek is the son of a Hornburg pastor and uncle of surgeon Bernhard von Langenbek . In 1794-1798 he studied under Ferdinand Lauder at the University of Jena , defended his doctoral dissertation. He gained rich experience in surgical operations at the Eye Hospital in Horneburg , and received a scholarship from the Hanover Royal House for further studies at the University of Vienna and Würzburg . In Würzburg he studied with Karl Caspar von Siebold . In 1802 he received the right to teach at the University of Gottingen . In the same year he received the title of privat-docent and joined the surgeon at the Göttingen Academic Hospital under the supervision of Karl Gustav Gimli . Leaving Gimli, from 1803 he lectured on anatomy. In 1804 he was appointed extraordinary professor. In 1807, he founded his own Institute of Surgery and Ophthalmology , in 1814 he received the rate of an ordinary professor at the University of Gottingen and the rank of surgeon general of the Hanover Army. In 1828-1829 he was engaged in the construction of his own anatomical theater . In 1806-1813, Langenbeck published in Göttingen the “Library of Surgery and Ophthalmology” in four volumes. The disciples of Langenbeck were Bernhard von Langenbeck and Louis Stromeyer .
