Content

History

It was founded in 1891 as the Private Chemical-Microscopic and Bacteriological Cabinet of F. M. Blumenthal . Later it was transformed into the Private Chemical and Bacteriological Institute of Dr. F. M. Blumenthal. In 1919, it was nationalized , transformed into the State (later Central) bacteriological institute of the People's Health of the RSFSR.

In 1931, it was transformed into the Central Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology (TsIEM) of the People's Commissariat of Health of the RSFSR by merging with the Central Bacteriological Institute of the Microbiological Institute, as well as the epidemiological and disinfection departments of the Sanitary and Hygienic Institute. In 1937 it was transferred to the USSR People's Health System. With the beginning of World War II , branches were organized in Alma-Ata and Sverdlovsk , a large group of specialists was sent to work in Kazan .

In 1949 it was transformed into the Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR , and was named after N. F. Gamalei . In 1966 he was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor .

In 2014, it was transformed into the Honorary Academician N.F. Gamalei Federal Research Center for Epidemiology and Microbiology (N.F. Gamalei Federal Research and Design Center for Electronic Medicine) by joining the D. I. Ivanovsky Research Institute of Virology [1] .

In 2017, it was renamed the Honorary Academician N.F. Gamalei National Research Center for Epidemiology and Microbiology [2] .

Field of Activity

The main activity is the solution of fundamental problems in the field of epidemiology , medical and molecular microbiology , infectious immunology . In these studies, a special place is occupied by the general and particular patterns of the spread and epidemic manifestation of infectious diseases ; structure and dynamics of the infectious pathology of the population; the emergence, functioning and epidemic manifestation of natural foci of human diseases; genetics , molecular biology , ecology and persistence of pathogenic microorganisms ; problems of general and infectious immunology, including immunoregulation and immunocorrection, ways and means of diagnosing and preventing infectious diseases.

The Institute is the basic organization of the Russian Federation within the framework of the problems of the Scientific Council of the Ministry of Health of Russia on Microbiology [3] , coordinates the scientific activities of institutes and institutions of the corresponding profile and implements research programs on the epidemiology of infectious diseases and nosocomial infections, natural focal human diseases, medical microbiology, genetics and molecular biology of bacteria , theoretical and applied infectious immunology. There are 9 centers of the Russian Ministry of Health (on rickettsioses , leptospirosis , brucellosis , tularemia , legionellosis , mycoplasmosis , chlamydia , clostridiosis, borreliosis ), most of which are the only specialized medical laboratories of the corresponding profile in Russia [4] . On the basis of the institute, the Department of Infectology of the Moscow Medical Academy named after I. M. Sechenov [5] .
