Biography

The son of Prince Alexei Andreyevich Golitsyn (1632-1684) and Irina Fyodorovna (died 1698), nee Princess Khilkova. Belonged to the third branch of the princes Golitsyn family , the founder of which was his father.

According to the memoirs of B.I. Kurakin, “a man of great mind, and especially wit, but unattractive, he loved fun, and was especially inclined to drink. And this is the first one that he began to deal with officers and foreign merchants. And because of his inclination towards foreigners, he led in openness to the court, and royal majesty inclined mercy to them. ”

When Tsar Peter I, who was actually removed from real power, lived in Preobrazhensky (1682–1689), B. A. Golitsyn kept in touch with his pupil, encouraged his hobbies in military affairs and science. During the conflict of Peter I with the ruler Sophia Alekseevna in 1689, he actively supported the 17-year-old king, following him to the Trinity-Sergius monastery and becoming his chief adviser and manager in his headquarters. After resolving the conflict in favor of the tsar and the removal of Sophia B. A. Golitsyn from power, he received the boyars office and the post of judge (chief) of the order of the Kazan Palace.

During the Azov campaign in 1695, he commanded the entire "lower cavalry", took part in the construction of ships "kumpanstvo", and at the time of the king's departure abroad, he was appointed one of the rulers of the state. He was the patron of the German grammatist Heinrich Ludolf who visited Russia.

After the Narva defeat, Peter ordered Golitsyn to recruit and form 10 dragoon regiments. Appointed later as voivod and governor of the Kazan and Astrakhan kingdoms, Golitsyn did not warn the Astrakhan rebellion in 1705 and was dismissed for it [2] .

Constantly drunk, careless in the administration of duties, B. A. Golitsyn, according to B. I. Kurakin , “ loved fun and ruined the region entrusted to him by bribes, ” but at the same time was “a great mind ”. A good expert on the Latin language, Golitsyn gave the children into the hands of Polish mentors and " openly led friendship with foreigners " [3] [4] .

Golitsyn died on October 18, 1714 in the monastery of Florischeva deserts of the Vladimir province , having accepted monasticism a few months before his death (the monk Bogolep) [5] .
