Jaffrey Said

Saeed Jaffrey ( English Saeed Jaffrey , W. Panj. ਸਈਦ ਜਾਫ਼ਰੀ , Urdu سعید جعفری ; Hindi सईद जाफ़री ; January 8, 1929 - November 15, 2015 ) - Indian and British actor . Over the course of his six-year career, he has starred in over one and a half hundred British, American, and Indian films and TV shows. Inscribed in the Guinness Book of Records as the only Indian actor to take part in 18 international film projects. Laureate of the Filmfare Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role , Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE). He was posthumously awarded the Padma Sri Order by the Indian government.

Biography

Said was born in the town of in the family of Punjabi Muslims Hamid Hussein Jaffrey and Hadiya Begum [1] [2] [3] . His father was a doctor and official of the Ministry of Health in Uttar Pradesh , so the family often moved. Said changed several different schools, which taught in Urdu, Hindi or English, which allowed him to learn all three languages [4] [5] . In 1945, he entered Allahabad University , where he received a bachelor 's degree in art in 1948 and a master 's degree in history in 1950 [6] .

In 1951, after graduation, Jaffrey was going to start working as an English teacher at a prestigious boarding school, but before that he decided to make a trip to Delhi. There he found out that the All-India Radio was looking for English-speaking broadcasters, passed the tests and was accepted, as soon as possible, began to write stories, monologues and plays for radio broadcasts [1] . In the same year he founded his theater company Unity Theater [6] [7] , which staged plays by playwrights such as Shakespeare , Oscar Wilde , John Priestley and Tennessee Williams [8] . Thanks to her, in 1954 he met actress and fell in love with her without memory [9] . Enthusiastic reviews of his game allowed him to become a Fulbright scholarship holder [1] , thanks to which he was able to study acting at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and earn a master's degree in drama at Catholic University of America in 1957 [5] [6] . Later, Madhur joined him in the USA, and they got married in 1958 [1] [4] .

In America, he worked at the State Tourist Office of India until 1961 [7] , and then got a job on the WQXR-FM radio station . He also continued to play in American theaters until 1964. [6]

In 1962, thanks to his talent, he became the first Indian to play a major role on Broadway , appearing as Professor Godbowle in the play "A Trip to India" [1] [4] [5] [10] . In 1965, he was offered the role of the god Brahma in the play “Kindly Monkeys” of the Arts Theater in London. His performance caused positive reviews and brought him a job offer from the BBC World Service [6] . By this time, their marriage with Madhur was in disarray due to his infidelity, and she, together with their three daughters Zia (born 1959), Mira (born 1960) and Sakina (born 1962), returned to their parents in Delhi. Said moved to the UK. To pay the bills, he got a job as a sales assistant at Harrods [9] . Continuing to play in the theater in London, he became the first Indian to get a major role in , playing a Pakistani photographer in the production of “On A Foggy Day” in 1968 [6] .

Jaffrey played his first film role in the 1969 film Ismail Merchant The Guru . However, luck smiled at him only when he, while starring in , met Michael Kane , who then suggested that John Houston take Jaffrey into the movie The Man Who Wanted to Become King (1975) [1] . The role of a translator helping two former British soldiers in India was a breakthrough for him, and his name was first printed on a poster, immediately after the names of Sean Connery and Michael Kane [11] . Two years later, Jaffrey appeared on the screen in his first Indian film - “ Chess Players ” by the famous Bengali director Satyajit Raya . In Bollywood, he began to specialize in the roles of eccentric uncles and wealthy fathers [9] .

In 1980, Jaffrey married Jennifer Sorrell, who was his agent.

In addition to roles in film and theater, Jaffrey translated and recorded hundreds of plays in Hindi, Urdu and English for the BBC World Service . So, in 1997, in the play “A Suitable Boy”, he single-handedly voiced 86 characters [8] .
