Biography
Karl Gustav Gimli is the son of the secretary at the court of Braunschweig, the younger brother of the Prussian official Johann Friedrich Wilhelm Gimli . In 1790, Gimli entered the University of Würzburg , where he studied under Karl Caspar von Siebold . Since 1792, Gimli studied at the University of Gottingen with August Gottlieb Richter and in 1794 became his assistant. September 6, 1794 he defended his thesis. In 1795, Gimli was appointed professor of the medical and surgical clinic in Braunschweig. In 1801, Gimli became a professor of medicine at the internal clinic of Jena University , succeeding Christoph Wilhelm Gufeland . In 1803, Gimli lectured in theoretical and practical surgery at the University of Gottingen and became the first professor of ophthalmology in Germany. Gimli introduced several instruments into ophthalmological practice and applied mydriatics to dilate the pupil . Karl Gustav Gimli studied with Karl Friedrich von Geisinger , Maximilian Joseph von Kelius , Dietrich Georg von Kieser , Wilhelm Baum , Peter Kruckenberg , Georg Hartog Gerzon and Ernst Alban .
In 1802, Gimli and his Vienna colleague Johann Adam Schmidt began publishing the first ophthalmic journal Ophthalmologic Library ( Ophthalmologische Bibliothek ). Gimli enjoyed international fame; on May 25, 1830, Niccolo Paganini turned to Gimli for advice.
In 1805, Gimli was appointed director of the academic hospital in Göttingen, in which he combined the outpatient clinic with the clinic of his teacher Richter. During this period, Gimli collaborated with Konrad Johann Martin Langenbeck . Gimli also served in the Prussian Army military hospital on the Rhine . Gimli died in a fall in the Lane River, allegedly committing suicide. After the death of his father, Ernst August Wilhelm Gimli , professor of physiology, comparative anatomy and forensic medicine, published his father's textbook “Diseases and malformations of the human eye and their treatment” ( Die Krankheiten und Missbildungen des menschlichen Auges und deren Heilung ). Son August Friedrich Karl Gimli became a chemist and professor at Kiel University .
