History
It was founded in the 11th or 12th century. It was a fortified city with several monasteries. In 1442 he received the first trading charter and by the 18th century became a commercial center.
Horsens is one of the most charming and oldest cities in Denmark. Once upon a time, a Viking settlement was located on this place. The city had a trade charter, favorable location and convenient port, cattle, in particular horses, were bred on the adjacent lands. Hence the name of the city: Horsens (from hors i næs , "horse" and "peninsula"). The boundaries of the old city of the Vikings and the growth of urban areas of all subsequent eras are quite easy to trace in the historical center of the city.
Attractions
On the outskirts of Horsens is located one of the oldest churches in Denmark - Tamprud. Its foundation coincided with the adoption of Christianity by Denmark. Interesting frescoes, one of the oldest in Denmark, have been preserved in the Tamprud Church almost in its original form.
Horsens is a true city of churches. In addition to Tamprudskaya there are more than 20 temples.
On Snake Hill, near Horsens, there are picturesque ruins of King Eric Menved's castle. This castle flourished in 1320-1618, but was then abandoned and subsequently dilapidated. Not far from the castle are the ruins of a Benedictine monastery.

Horsens is home to a major international university named after Vitus Bering .
