John McDade Howell ( Eng. John McDade Howell ; January 28, 1922 - January 3, 2016 ) is an American educational activist, chancellor (head) of East Carolina University in 1982-1987.

Biography

Born in the city of , Alabama [1] in the family of John William and Betty May Lee Howell; in addition to him, the family had another son and seven daughters [2] . In 1942 he entered the US Air Force and fought for three years at the ; reached the rank of master sergeant [2] and was awarded the Bronze Star [1] .

After the war, he entered the University of Alabama , having received there by 1948 a diploma of bachelor of journalism ; a year later, received a master 's degree in political science . He was a member of the prestigious student community of Phi Beta Kappa . Continuing his scientific activity, by 1954 (according to other sources, by 1952) he was awarded a doctorate from Duke University in political science [1] .

Howell's teaching career began that same year as an assistant professor of political science at the University of Memphis , Tennessee, and . [2] At the same time, he met David, who taught at the same college, Gladys and married her, became the father of two sons, David and Joey [2] .

A few years later, in 1957, John Howell served as an assistant professor at East Carolina University in Greenville , North Carolina . By 1961, he was seeking the position of full professor and continued his further career there. In 1963, he founded the department of political science at the university and became its first chapter. By 1966, Howell became the dean of the faculty of arts and sciences, by 1969 the dean of postgraduate education, by 1975 - the vice chancellor for academic work, and held this position until 1979.

Over the next few years, John Howell returns to teaching, but in early 1982 he was nominated as a candidate for re-election of the Chancellor of East Carolina University. In May 1982, he won the election of 120 candidates and began to act as head of the university, formally passing the inauguration on February 4, 1983. John McDade Howell worked in this position until his retirement in 1987. [1] During his career he has published many articles and a number of monographs on international relations and international law [2] .

In 1991, the merits of John Howell and his wife (also university employees before her husband occupied the top university position) to the East Carolina University were marked by his dedication to one of the campus buildings, now known as the Howell Science Complex and the host Department of Physics and biology [1] [3] .

In the last years of his life he used the care of the Golden Living Center in Greenville as an old man. Died January 3, 2016 from natural causes [2] .
