Description

On the territory of the modern Oryol region about 50 ancient sites are scattered. Many of them disappeared, and only the remains of earthen fortifications, surrounded by moats and ramparts, testify to the life that once "spurred on" here. But the history of some of them, such as Domagoshch , Old Vorotynsk , the city of Deshkin , Khotiml , Korshev , etc., has survived to the present day.

The hillfort [1] is located on the territory of the Oryol Polesie National Park, founded in 1994. Nearby is the burial mound "Radovische". These archaeological sites are located near the village of the same name.

The oldest fortified settlement was built by the Balts during the Iron Age . Presumably, Radovyshche became the first settlement founded by the Balts on the territory of the Oryol region along the path of the advancement of northern tribes to the south. The basis of the economy of the Upper Okean Baltic was cattle breeding, agriculture, fishing, gathering. Were developed: obtaining iron, bronze casting, bone cutting, spinning, weaving. The settlement was a small fortified settlement near agricultural fields. By typology, this settlement belongs to the “swamp type”. In terms of oval settlement towered 2.5 meters and was an island in the middle of the swamp. It was surrounded by an annular shaft and in front of the shaft there was an annular ditch up to two meters deep, filled with swamp water. The ancient settlement Radovishche was opened in 1902 by the Oryol local historian V.R. Apukhtin. Excavations were carried out in 2004-2006 by the archaeological expedition of the Oryol Museum of Local Lore under the direction of S. D. Krasnoshchekova, with the support of the Department of Tourism and Local History of the Administration of the Oryol Region. Also, students of the Department of Service and Tourism of the OSU took part in the excavations [2] . Numerous fragments of sinkers for nets were found - evidence of fishing, clay figures of people - the probability of finding a cult place here, many fragments of stucco ceramics. One and a half kilometers from the settlement, a burial mound has been preserved, which belongs not to the Balts, but to the Slavs - Vyatichs and belongs to the 11th – 13th centuries. The Vyatichi Slavs who came here, according to their customs, burned their dead [3] [4] .

Life on the hill ceased at the turn of our era. This is probably due to the promotion of the postchep tribes .
