Biography

The son of Philippe de Croix , count de Chimes, and Walburga von Moers.

Senor de Wavren , Liller , Saint-Venant , Malannois, Ekossinn, Merpen, Prüvy, Berbier [1] .

During the life of his father he bore the title of Baron de Chievren [1] .

He was brought up at the court of the Dukes of Bavaria, relatives of his mother [2] .

He was bestowed knight by Maximilian of Habsburg before the battle of Ginegat began on August 7, 1479. He had hardly died in this battle, being knocked out of the saddle, and was saved only thanks to Maximilian, who courageously rushed to his aid [3] .

In 1486, he was appointed, together with the Earl of Nassau and Senior Raventein, a general of the imperial army of 20 thousand people who opposed the forces of Marshal of France Philippe de Krevkor . Unblocked Teruan and captured Lance and the surrounding castles [1] .

Maximilian, crowned in Aachen by the King of Rome , on April 9, 1486, as a reward for services, elevated the land of Chime to the dignity of an imperial principality [1] [4] .

In 1491, at the chapter in Mechelen, he was accepted into the knights of the Order of the Golden Fleece , having received the chain that his father had previously worn [4] .

In 1496, Philip I the Beautiful instructed him to negotiate reconciliation with Robert de La Marc, and on January 4, 1498 appointed his wife, Juan of Castile and Aragonese , to replace Senor de Bevreux [1] [4] .

The Prince, who highly appreciated Charles, in 1500 chose him as the recipient for the baptism of his first child, Karl Habsburg , who received the name of the godfather [2] [1] .

Later, the prince was appointed the tutor of the young archduke, but since the ruler Margaret of Austria almost completely concentrated in her hands the care of her nephew, Charles de Croy did not exert any influence on him, he was burdened with his position, and in 1509 he easily lost her to Guillaume de Croy [ 1] [4] .

He was one of the witnesses at the signing of the marriage contract between Margarita of Austria and Philibert of Savoy [4] .

In 1515, he accompanied Princess Vienna of Austria , Vienna, destined to marry the King of the Czech Republic and Hungary, Louis II [5] .

April 27, 1518 participated in the signing of the Treaty of Saint-Tron between the emperor and brothers Erard de La Marc , Bishop of Liege, and Robert II de La Marc , Duke of Bouillon [6] [4] .

Then he went to the Spanish court, and in the same year accompanied Archduke Ferdinand to the Netherlands [1] .

Received from uncle Philippe de Wavren the lands of Wavren, Liller and Saint-Venant [6] . In 1521, he transferred to his brother-in-law Philip II de Croy the position of deputy captain-general of the Hainaut region and the city of Valenciennes [4] .
