Biography
Theodore Leber is the son of a professor of linguistics from Karlsruhe . Initially, he planned to become a chemist, but the famous professor of chemistry Robert Wilhelm Bunsen convinced him to take up medicine, since there were plenty of chemists at that time. In Heidelberg, Leber became a student at Hermann Helmholtz , defended his doctoral dissertation and worked for a year as an assistant to Hermann Jakob Knapp in the eye clinic at the University of Heidelberg .
Subsequently, he went to Vienna , where under the guidance of Karl Ludwig he studied physiology . Soon, Leber returned to ophthalmology and worked as an assistant physician at Albrecht von Gref in Berlin in 1867-1870. For some time he worked in Paris . In 1869 he received the right to teach at the University of Berlin . In 1871, he was appointed extraordinary professor of ophthalmology and director of the eye clinic of the University of Gottingen , from 1890 he headed the eye clinic in Heidelberg, where he worked until 1910. In 1888, Leber was elected a member of Leopoldina . Theodore Leber is named after hereditary optic neuropathy and amaurosis .
Theodore Leber is buried in the Heidelberg Highland Cemetery next to his second wife Ottilia Leber, daughter of the theologian Otto Mayer . Theodore Leber's nephew - specialist in tropical ophthalmology Alfred Leber .
