Biography

Alfred Bilshovsky was born into a Jewish family. After graduating from the royal gymnasium in Glatz , he studied medicine at the Berlin , Heidelberg , Breslavl and Leipzig universities . Student of Professor Hubert Zatler at the Leipzig Eye Clinic. During this period, Bilshovsky developed strong friendly relations with his colleague Emil Kryukman . In 1900, Bilshovsky received the right to teach at the medical faculty of the University of Leipzig and specialized in ophthalmology. In 1907, he wrote his most important work, “Disorders of eye mobility in accordance with the latest research,” which was included in the Textbook of General Ophthalmology by Albrecht von Graefe and Theodor Zemis . After that, he was appointed extraordinary professor.

In 1912, Bilshovsky was invited to teach at the Department of Ophthalmology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Marburg . During the First World War he devoted himself to the treatment of seriously wounded and blind soldiers. In 1915, a reserve officer organized a 36-bed hospital in Marburg, where soldiers were treated who were blinded by grenades and poisonous gases. Blishovsky quickly realized that medical recovery alone was not enough. He instructed his student Karl Strehl to teach braille to blind soldiers. Bilshovsky, Strehl and other influential people in Berlin established the Union of Blind Academics in Germany, the modern German Union of Students and Working Blind and Visually Impaired. For his work, Bilshovsky was awarded Field Marshal Paul von Hindenburg with the Iron Cross , and Emperor Wilhelm II awarded him the title of Privy Medical Advisor.

In 1923-1924, Bilshovsky was a teacher and director of the Eye Clinic of Breslavl University, resigned on September 30, 1934 of his own free will in connection with anti-Semitic speeches of students and after his name was deleted from the list of publishers of the ophthalmology archive Albrecht von Gref and Central Journal of General Ophthalmology. Political changes forced Bilshovsky to pursue a teaching career in the United States, where Bilshovsky received recognition for his achievements in science and didactics. In 1937, the Dartmouth Institute was opened in New Hampshire near Bilshovsky, where Bilshovsky conducted research and taught until his death. He was buried in the cemetery of Dartmouth College. In honor of Alfred Bilshovsky, a test with a tilt of the head with paresis of a block nerve is named.
