DUET with Mikhail Alperin

With M. Alperin

Since 1988, Arkady has been collaborating with pianist and composer Mikhail Alperin (1956 - 2018).

The album of the duo “Wave Of Sorrow”, released in 1990 by ECM, becomes the first ECM album in Russian jazz discography.

The first Alperin - Shilkloper duet concert in Western Europe took place in 1989! The musicians were invited to perform at the famous Norwegian festival Vossa Jazz. The day before the concert, the duo visited the famous Rainbow Studio in Oslo and recorded several original compositions by Mikhail Alperin with legendary sound engineer Jan Erik Kongshaug. A day later, ECM producer Manfred Eicher heard the demo and invited a duet to record an album! A year later, the album was released under the name “Wave Of Sorrow” and attracted the attention of European critics. “Alperin’s compositions cannot be classified in terms of genre,” wrote Thomas Rothschild in Frankfurter Rundshau. - These are mostly aphoristic plays dating back to both Bartok, Schnittke or Kurtag, and Jarrett or Correa. They are truly unique and must be heard. ”

Later, Arkady Shilkloper participates in the recording of three more Mikhail Alperin's ECM albums: “North Story” (1997), “First Impression” (1999) and “Her First Dance” (2007)

MOSCOW ART TRIO

Moscow Art Trio

In 1990, the duet invited Sergei Starostin, an enthusiast of Russian authentic folklore, to collaborate (vocals, clarinet, ethnic instruments). The ensemble is called "Moscow Art Trio". The trio regularly tours, and today is perhaps one of the most interesting, original and famous ethno-jazz groups from Russia. Moscow Art Trio albums were released on the Russian company Boheme Music and on the German label Jaro.

In total, Moscow Art Trio released 11 albums.

DUET with Vadim Neselovsky

With Vadim Neselovsky

Since 2010, he has been actively collaborating with pianist Vadim Neselovsky. The duo recorded 3 albums: Last Snow (ArtBeat), Krai (Neuklang) and Lustrum (Neuklang)

Arkady Shilkloper about Krai album: “A lot has been invested in the concept of“ edge ”. This is the side dear to man, and the end of the time period, and the boundaries of space. It is interesting that in English there is a consonant word cry (in Russian it reads “edge”), which in translation means “crying”.

Several foundations merged into a single concept. We like these ambiguous names. They serve as confirmation that music is an abstract art. For example, in the composition of my authorship Intrada, it is difficult to trace its involvement in the name of the program. But I also like this, because the audience has its own individual fantasies, and the name can sometimes distract from their own emotions, which may not coincide with the title of the work. ” [6]

DUET with Jon Sass
