History

The name "Valkensward" was first mentioned in the archives in 1702 , when it was written with " dt " at the end of the word. During this period, Valkensward was known by the name Weerd . Although in the archives of the period from 1600 to 1700, it was also referred to as Verckensweerde . At that time, Valkensward was the most important settlement in the region. The name Weerd was first mentioned in archives from 1446. The name Valkensward has changed over the course of 400 years from Wedert to Weerd to Valkensward . Here the monastery of Echternach was founded and the lands around were given at its disposal. Unlike other municipalities , which were directly subordinate to the Duke of Brabant , Valkensward was subordinate to Echternach Abbey . Initially, the village was formed from several small quarries in the XII century, quarries and water mills . [2] In the 13th and 14th centuries, various kinds of villages grow around this industry. The first major well-known landowners were the gentlemen van Herlaer , who, presumably, from the beginning of the 13th century established trade with other cities. Van Herlaer played an important role between the Duke of Brabant and the Earl of Gelre , who had some kind of claim, on the territory in the current province of North Brabant . Valkensward was famous for breeding peregrine falcons , which were actively used in hunting. In the 19th century, industrialists trained farmers to grow tobacco . There was a practice of processing raw materials at home, and not in factory conditions, especially in the winter. Many of the small factories that Valkensward was famous for during World War II did not survive. At the beginning of Operation Market Garden , September 17, 1944, they came under artillery fire from advancing British troops. Only two large factories remained operational for several decades. [3]
