Biography, Education, and Career
From a family with military traditions. In 1980, he graduated with honors from the Department of Arabic Philology of the Eastern Faculty of Leningrad State University, in 1983 - from graduate school of the Leningrad Branch of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the USSR Academy of Sciences. In 1984, in the Leningrad part of the Institute of Ethnography of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, he defended his thesis for the degree of candidate of historical sciences on the topic “Ethnosocial terminology of the Koran as a source on the history and ethnography of Arabia at the turn of the VI – VII century”. Seven years later, there he defended his doctoral dissertation "The Koran as a historical source and literary monument." In 1989, he trained at the Institut d'Etudes Arabes et Islamiques, Université de la Sorbonne Nouvelle (Paris III). In 1984-2000 - An employee of the Leningrad branch of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the USSR Academy of Sciences, from senior laboratory assistant to deputy director for scientific work. Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Manuscripta Orientalia Magazine (1995-2000); from 2000 to the present - chief editor. Since 2018 - Deputy Chief Editor of the journals Ethnography and Kunstkamera, member of the editorial board of the journal EtnoAntropologia (Italy). From 2000 to the present, Deputy Director of the Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography. Peter the Great (Kunstkamera) RAS on scientific work. At the invitation of the prominent Italian Islamic scholar prof. Sergio Noah Noseda (1931-2008) E.A. Rezvan joined the editorial committee of the Early Qur'ans international research and publishing project. The Era of the Prophet, the Right Guided Caliphs and the Umayyades (Noseda Foundation, Italy), dedicated to the study and publication of the oldest and most important manuscripts of the Koran. Rezvan is the initiator of the creation and organizer of the development of the automatic recognition system for the Arabic font, the most popular today in the Arab East (Al-Qari 'Al-Ali, now Sakhr Automatic Reader). Founder and Chairman of the Editorial Board of the Kunstkamera - Archive and Manuscripta Orientalia Electronic book series, editor-in-chief of the Culture and Ideology of the Muslim East series, member of the editorial boards of a number of scientific series, domestic and foreign scientific journals, organizer of several international scientific congresses, held in St. Petersburg, the author of articles for a number of academic domestic and foreign encyclopedic publications.
Since 2006 - Honorary Professor of the UNESCO Chair for Comparative Studies of Spiritual Traditions, the Specifics of Their Cultures and Inter-Religious Dialogue of the D.S.D. Russian Institute of Cultural and Natural Heritage Research Likhacheva, since 2018 - Professor, HSE Campus in St. Petersburg (St. Petersburg School of Humanities and Arts, Basic Chair of the Peter the Great Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography (Kunstkamera) RAS). He taught at the Philosophical and Oriental faculties of St. Petersburg State University, at the Smolny Institute of Liberal Arts and Sciences (St. Petersburg State University), at the Moscow Center of Stanford University, at the Kazan (Volga) Federal University, and South Kazakhstan State University named after M. Auezova, Union College of London - Qatar. He gave public lectures in Kuwait, Indonesia, Oman, Great Britain, Qatar.
He has rich expeditionary experience, worked and organized expedition trips to Yemen (1989, 2007); Uzbekistan (2001, 2004, 2005); Vietnam (2005); India (2002, 2005, 2009), Sri Lanka and Maldives, 2009; China and Hong Kong (2005), China (2008); Egypt (2006, 2007); Ethiopia (2008, 2009, 2010); Tanzania and Zanzibar, 2010; Indonesia (Sumatra, 2013); Kazakhstan (2010, 2011, 2012, 2015), Oman (2016), Jordan (2017).

Islamic studies; history and ethnography of the peoples of the Near and Middle East; history and ethnography of the peoples of Central Asia; coranistics; the diversity of the world of Islam; visual anthropology; Ethnic museology; historiography, source study and methodology of ethnographic science.
Key Scientific Achievements
The author of more than 300 scientific works (including 15 monographs and a series of exhibition catalogs) published in Russian, English, Arabic, French, German, Japanese, Italian, Uzbek, Finnish, Persian, Ukrainian, Tatar and other languages. Creator and leader of the scientific direction “Quranic Ethnography”. He is the author of a series of works on Islamic studies and Koranistics, which is largely based on the study of manuscript and archival collections (including the identification, attribution, scientific description and publication of one of the oldest and most important manuscripts of the Koran in the world, the so-called “Usman Quran”, revered by Muslims Central Asia for almost five hundred years the first list of the Holy Text). He is the author of a series of monographs devoted to Russian-Arab relations and based on the study of domestic archival sources, and a series of works devoted to the diversity of the Islamic world and based on the results of many years of field research. He is currently working on a new Russian translation of the Qur'an.
