The score was commissioned by Rubinstein, director of the Paris Grand Opera Theater between 1862 and 1871. The original libretto was written by Jules Barbier in French. The composer began working on the opera in 1875-1876, when the changed leadership of the Opera, apparently, already refused to stage it.

The stage premiere took place on October 1, 1879 at the Hamburg City Opera [* 1] , and for the libretto was staged, it was translated into German. The emperor's part was performed by tenor German Winkelman .

In Russia, the opera was performed in Italian. Her premiere took place at the St. Petersburg Mariinsky Theater on February 10 (January 29 according to the old style) in 1884 . Dance scenes of Act II were staged by Marius Petipa . The ballet began with a dance of Roman warriors with darts, then bacchanas appeared, headed by Gorshenkova ; their fast dance, built on the change of pirouettes and flying jeté en tournant , evoked the ardent approval of the public. The satyrs who appeared began with the warriors a battle for the Bacchantes. The warriors won and carried away their “booty” with a jubilant triumph [1] . Sergey Khudekov responded that it was “a whole ballet dancer who was given“ meaning ”. These are dances with “action”, with a plot that is easy to understand for anyone who is not even dedicated to the sacraments of pantomime ” [1] . At the same time, he criticized the ancient tunics of the performers, following the established belief that dancers should appear on the stage exclusively in magnificent ballet tunics .

The first performance in its original form, with a French libretto, took place at the on February 14, 1894 .

Among the performers of the part of Nero was Enrico Caruso .
