Life and career
Koblin was a student at the University of Washington , receiving a bachelor 's degree in Chinese literature in 1967 . He entered graduate school at the same university, receiving Ph.D. in Chinese language and literature in 1972 , defending a thesis "Introduction to the textual and linguistic problems of Erya ." After defense, he worked as an assistant professor for a year and in 1973 received a position at Iowa University , where he worked all his career.
At the dawn of his career, he made an important treasure in Sino-Tibetan linguistics, but since the mid-1990s he worked mainly on the alphabetic representation of the Chinese language. Working with Jerry Norman , he advanced a new direction in Chinese historical phonology , giving less importance to and other , emphasizing the traditional comparative method.
Coblin is an honorary professor at the University of Iowa.
