Geography
Geographical position
St. Johann is a beautiful small town (urban-type village). Located in the valley between the Wilder Kaiser and Kitzbuheller Horn mountains in the middle of Kitzbuhel County. Here, at the confluence of the three rivers - Kitzbuehler-Ahe, Reuters-Ahe and Fieberbrunner-Ahe - one big river Gross-Ahe is formed.
St. Johann is located at an altitude of 660 m above sea level, 65 km from Salzburg, 100 km from Innsbruck and 125 km from Munich.

History
The area in which St. Johann is located already in the 4th century BC was inhabited by the Celtic tribe Ambizontir, who mined copper ore in the surrounding mountains.
In the 8th century (probably before 738), Catholic missionaries built the church of St. Johann ( German: Sankt Johann ), dedicated to John the Baptist . From here came the name of the village - German. St. Johann in Tirol (St. Johann in Tirol). The first documented mention of the church is 1150 . Since 1446, the church becomes the summer residence of the Kemzey bishops.
In 1540, a copper and silver deposit was discovered at the Rerobichl mine near Oberndorf, which brought St. Johann great profits. In the XVII century, the mine reached a length of 780 m and was the deepest mine in the world.
In 1875, the Giselaban railway was built in St. Johann . From this moment, an economic boom begins and tourism begins.
In 1927, St. Johann separated from Oberndorf and became an independent administrative unit.
In 1954, St. Johann received his own coat of arms, and two years later - the status of a settlement with a market.
