Sorrowful insensibility ( Latin Anaesthesia psychica dolorosa ) is the literary name for mental anesthesia , a special kind of mental illness, the most characteristic of which is the phenomenon of alienation of higher emotions. Patients observe complete insensibility to loved ones, loss of ability to experience pleasure and displeasure, joy, love, hatred and sadness; they figuratively call themselves "living corpses."
