The era of the sixth generation of gaming systems (also called the era of 128-bit gaming systems ) refers to computer games and game consoles , as well as handheld gaming devices that began to appear at the turn of the 21st century. The list of sixth generation platforms includes Sega Dreamcast , Sony PlayStation 2 , Nintendo GameCube and Microsoft Xbox . This era began on November 27, 1998 , with the release of Dreamcast, after which PlayStation 2 was released in March 2000. Dreamcast was discontinued in March 2001, and sales of the Nintendo GameCube began in the same year in September and the Xbox in November. . Even after the beginning of the seventh generation of consoles , the sixth generation did not end, since the PlayStation 2 production stopped only at the end of December 2012, but still for it they continued to release new games until mid-2013.
