Biography
The son of the Governor of Malmohus Earl Fredrik Posse and Baroness Charlotte Bennett. Until 1840 he studied law at Lund University, after which he worked in judicial institutions in Sweden. Since 1847 - Member of the Supreme Court. In 1849 he left the civil service and concentrated on agricultural production on his estates.
In 1856, he took up politics. He was elected to the Riksdag of Sweden. In 1858 he became chairman of the Banking Committee. For several years he was the most famous and influential member of the Riksdag. From 1867 to 1875 - Chairman of the Government Commission and the Special Parliament, Deputy Chairman of the Electoral Commission (Särskilda Utskottet).
In 1867, agrarian deputies and some deputies from landowners from the second chamber united in a new party, called: the party of "farmers" (Agrarian Party). The landlords were led by Count Arvid Posse, Emil Kay and landowner Karl Ivarsson. The party of "farmers" began to pursue an opposition policy towards the government of Luys de Gera , vigorously defended the interests of farmers and fought against senior officials, large landowners and industrialists.
Since 1876 - speaker of parliament.
On April 19, 1880, he took over as prime minister of Sweden. From December 1880 to March 1881, at the same time - Minister of Finance.
June 13, 1883 resigned.
After resigning as prime minister, in 1883–1889 he was president of the Swedish Administrative Court of Appeal.
In 1882-1890 he was elected a member of the First House (Första kammaren) of the Riksdag as the representative of the southern Kalmar County . As a deputy opposed the introduction of grain tariffs in 1887, he fought for free trade. He also expressed his sympathy for the moderate reform of suffrage.
He was elected a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Agriculture and Forestry (1879), an honorary member of the Royal Physiographic Society in Lund (1878) and the Society of Officers of the Royal Navy (1880).
