Jerry Lee Norman ( born Jerry Lee Norman , July 16, 1936 , Watsonville , CA - July 7, 2012 , Seattle ) is an American linguist , sinologist , known for his work on Chinese dialects and Chinese historical phonology (especially dialects Ming ) and Manchu language .

Jerry Norman had a significant influence on Chinese linguistics and was known for showing the importance of Minsk dialects for learning the ancient Chinese language [1] .
Biography
Jerry Norman was born July 16, 1936 in Watsonville, California, USA. After graduation, he entered the University of California at Berkeley , where he studied Chinese with the outstanding linguist and encyclopedist [2] . In 1965, he worked with Leo Chen on introducing the and the Fuzhou-English dictionary. In 1966, Norman became a full-time linguist at the Chinese Linguistics Project at Princeton University [3] . He traveled to Taiwan , where he conducted field studies of the Taiwanese dialect . In 1969 he defended his dissertation on the Fujian at the University of Berkeley [4] . From 1972 to the end of his scientific career in 1998, he worked at the Asian Languages Department at Washington University .
In a series of works in 1973, Norman applied a comparative method for the reconstruction of the Proto-Minsk language on the basis of the generally accepted norms of the modern Minsk dialect.
Died July 7, 2012 from lung fibrosis [5] .
