Sierra Nevada low mountain forests

Forests in the Yosemite Valley .

Sierra Nevada low mountain forests ( English Sierra Nevada lower montane forest, yellow pine forest ) are plant communities located in the low mountains of the western and eastern slopes of Sierra Nevada ( California ). In the north, the strip of these forests occupies heights from 370 to 1680 m above sea level. in the south - from 760 to 2740 m above sea level These forest communities are distributed within the large Pacific Pacific temperate rainforest ecoregion .

The climate in which communities are formed is characterized by hot and dry summers and cold and snowy winters. A layer of snow, sometimes more than a meter deep, may not melt for several months.

The tree layer is characterized by great species diversity. However, pine species take a significant part in the stand: yellow pine ( Pinus ponderosa ) on the western slopes and Jeffrey's pine on the eastern [1] .

Types of trees:

  • Yellow pine ( Pinus ponderosa )
  • Geoffrey Pine ( Pinus jeffreyi )
  • Lambert Pine ( Pinus lambertiana )
  • Pseudotsuga menziesii
  • Solid Fir ( Abies concolor )
  • Calocedrus decurrens
  • Kellogg Oak (Californian Black Oak, Quercus kelloggii )
  • Large-leaved maple ( Acer macrophyllum )
