Title
Broken Hand Peak got its name in memory of Thomas Fitzpatrick [2] [3] , a real mountain man .
Fitzpatrick immigrated to the United States from Ireland at the age of 17, and in 1822, at the age of 23, he joined an expedition led by William Ashley to explore the origins of Missouri . The expedition reached its goal only in the spring of next year. By this time, Fitzpatrick had earned a reputation as a mountain man , once even saving an expedition from an attack by black-footed Indians .
Following the success of the expedition, Ashley appointed Fitzpatrick the leader of the expedition to find new routes through the Rocky Mountains . As a result of this expedition, a pass was opened in the southern part of the Wind River Range .
Fitzpatrick received his nickname “broken (mutilated) arm” ( Eng. Broken hand ) in 1826, when a musket exploded in his hands, tearing off two fingers. The non-Persian Indians called him "a broken (mutilated) arm, the leader of all mountimen."
Thomas Fitzpatrick was also made famous by a series of expeditions to the west, including , reconnaissance of the Oregon Trail, and service as an Indian expedition agent for John Fremont, along with the even more famous Keith Carson , whom he met in Santa Fe at 1841 [4] .
General Information
Broken Hand Peak is one of the first peaks to meet tourists from Spring Creek, Colorado. Its sheer eastern wall is a good demonstration of the rocks in the area. The western slope is grassy and more gentle. Broken Hand (literally translated “broken arm”) is a suitable name for this peak, because its top and northwest ridge look like a hand. In particular, a free-standing peak on the eastern side is often called the “thumb” [5] .
Broken Hand Peak is the modest southwestern neighbor of Mount . Since the pass between these mountains is used in the standard climbing route to Creston Needle, the 20th highest peak in Colorado will always be associated with this giant. Of course, the highlight of the climb to the mountain and beautiful views, the tourist will get on .
Compared to , Broken Hand Peak is easy to climb. Provided that the route is well guided, climbing Broken Hand Peak in complexity will not exceed class 2+ [6] according to the , but most likely, in the end, the tourist will have to scramble on one or two sites. There are several routes to the peak of Broken Hand Peak, the most popular route along the ridges of the western slope runs 30 meters below the route through the western Broken Hand pass. This peak in itself is a good direction, but given that the route to it is part of the 4327 meters route (as part of the route to ), combining these two peaks in one track would be a reasonable choice [5] .
