Stefan Crater ( lat. Stefan ) - a large ancient impact crater in the northern hemisphere of the far side of the moon . The name was given in honor of the Austrian physicist and mathematician Joseph Stefan (1835–1893) and approved by the International Astronomical Union in 1970. The formation of the crater dates back to the preectarian period [1] .

Crater Description
The closest neighbors of the crater are the Wegener crater adjacent to it in the west; Crater Pendant in the north-north-west; Chapman Crater in the northeast; Rynin Crater adjacent to the east; Bregg Crater in the southeast and Lacchini Crater in the south [2] . The selenographic coordinates of the center of the crater are , diameter 112.2 km [3] , depth 2.9 km [1] .
Stefan Crater has a polygonal shape and is significantly destroyed. The shaft is flattened, the southern end of the crater is overlain by the satellite crater Stefan L. The inner slope of the crater is wide, terraced, marked by many small craters. The bottom of the crater bowl is flooded and re - formed by lava , above the surface of which are the edges of the shaft of a small crater in the south-western part and two small craters in the north-eastern part. A little to the west of the center of the bowl is a single hill, possibly the top of a lava-flooded central peak.
