The award is given to a player who is an example for all others, showing leadership skills, game vision and ball skills on the basketball court, thereby embodying all the qualities of Nancy Lieberman in the arena. The selection of nominees, the number of which is constantly changing, is carried out by voting among sports observers throughout the country. The winner will be announced at the Final Four of the NCAA tournament, and the awards ceremony will take place next Wednesday at the Detroit Sports Club through the Rotary Club of Detroit. Starting in 2014, when the winner was Odissie Sims from the University of Baylor , the prize is awarded to the Basketball Hall of Fame, which appoints a special commission, which in turn selects the winner from among the contenders.
Five players, Sue Bird, Diana Taurasi , Skylar Diggins , Moraya Jefferson and Sabrina Ionescu received this prize several times, and Bird won it three times. Basketball players of Connecticut University, who lead by a very large margin (8 times), the University of Notre Dame and the University of Oregon (2 times) became the winners of this nomination more often than others. In addition, the Connecticut Huskis players almost always (7 times), when they won this award, won the NCAA championship title , with the exception of the 2000/2001 season , when the basketball players of Notre Dame Fighting Irish became the winners. The current holder of this award is Sabrina Ionescu of the University of Oregon.
