The book was written based on the impressions of the author during a trip along the Yangtze River in 1919 - 1920 in China and is a freely arranged sequence of travel sketches, notes and reflections and plot-complete stories. Somerset Maugham subsequently included one of the latter under the name “Taipan” in the collections of his stories. This story was published in Russian in periodicals in 1934 and 1992 . "On the Chinese screen" was released almost simultaneously in England and the United States in 1922 .
The work was first translated into Russian by I. Gurova , especially for “Collected Works in Five Volumes. Volume Five. "
