History
Handball became known in Russia at the beginning of the 20th century, the first competitions took place in Moscow in 1922, but the game was widely used only in the post-war years, and in 2 variations: with 11 and 7 players in a team. In accordance with the rules adopted in 1948, the game 11 × 11 was called “hand ball”, and 7 × 7 - handball. Despite the final transition to the rules of the game 7 × 7 in 1962, the term “hand ball” was fixed in Russian and was the official name for handball until 1990. Created to popularize this sport in 1955, a public organization retained the name of the All-Union Section (Federation) of the hand ball. In 1958, the USSR Handball Federation became a member of the International Handball Federation , thanks to which sports clubs and national teams of the USSR received the right to participate in international competitions. The USSR men's handball team was formed in 1960 and debuted at the World Cup in Czechoslovakia in 1964, the women's team was created in 1962 and then took part in the World Cup in Romania [1] [2] [3] .

Until 1992, the Union of Handball Players of the RSFSR was a member of the Handball Federation of the USSR, which united sports federations of all union republics. After the collapse of the USSR, the All-Union Federation was abolished, and on March 2, 1992 at the founding conference in Volgograd , the Russian Handball Players Union (SGR) was created, the first president of which was elected Honored Master of Sports of the USSR, Honored Trainer of the USSR Alexander Borisovich Kozhukhov . In 2004, Kozhukhov was elected President of the Commission on the organization and conduct of competitions of the International Federation of Handball and left a leading position in the CGR, retaining the status of Advisor to the President and Honorary President of the Union. The only candidate for the December 2004 election conference was Vladimir Grigoryev, deputy head of the Federal Agency for Press and Mass Communications, former player of the Zaporozhye and Kuntsevo handball clubs. He led the organization for one Olympic cycle until November 2008. In January 2009, Boris Sergeyevich Alyoshin, Director General of AvtoVAZ, was elected the new president of the SGR.
