Biography
Theophilus Painter was born on August 22, 1889 in Salem in the religious family of an English philology teacher at Roanoke College. Theophilus Painter since childhood was very seriously ill, so he was forced to attend home schooling . After receiving a certificate of maturity, the father first brought his son to the light - he became a student at Roanoke College in physics and chemistry and soon graduated from it. Defining the study of chemistry as his life calling, in 1908 he became a student at Yale University, and in 1909 he graduated from it [3] . In 1914 he returned there again as a researcher and worked until 1916. The future life of Theophilus Painter will be associated with Texas and the university of the same name , where he worked from 1916 to 1922 as a researcher, from 1922 to 1946 he served as professor, from 1946 to 1952 he served as president, and from 1952 to 1966 becomes a researcher again. Since 1966 - retired.
Theophilus Painter died on October 5, 1969 in Austin [4] .
Scientific work
The main scientific works are devoted to the cytogenetics of humans and animals.
- Studied heterochromatin regions of chromosomes , RNA synthesis in chromosome puffs .
- On the basis of a new technique for studying the karyotype , he showed the possibility of identifying the relationship of chromosomal aberrations with hereditary diseases.
- One of the first to analyze human chromosomes.
- Conducted a cytogenetic study of chromosomes in comparison with chromosomal maps.
- 1933 - Found that the structure of the giant chromosomes of the salivary glands of Drosophila reflects the appearance of various mutations.
