The second son of Louis I de Blois-Chatillon , who died in 1346 at the Battle of Crescy . Until 1360 he was under the care of his mother - Jeanne de Beaumont.
Inherited the counties of Blois and Dunois in 1372 after the death of Louis II - his older brother.
In the same year he married the heiress of Geldern Matilda . Since both of her brothers had already died by then, Jean II proclaimed himself the Duke of Geldern. His candidacy was supported by the Bishop of Utrecht Arnold Horn and some other noble nobles. At the same time, the right to Geldern was claimed by Maria, the sister of Matilda, in favor of her son Wilhelm VII of Julich .
The War of Geldern Legacy began , in which Jean II was defeated. In 1379, he renounced all rights to Geldern in exchange for an annual pension.
In marriage with Matilda, he had no children. Two of his sons are known from his mistress - Isabo d'Isberg:
- Jean I, Senior de Trelone
- Guy, señor de Heften.
After the death of Jean II, the counties of Blois and Dugois were inherited by his brother - Guy II .
