Biography
Nanetta was the sixth child in the family of organ and piano master Johann Andreas Stein and his wife Magdalena (Augsburg). The first lessons in music were taught to her by her father, who was influenced by his friend Ignaz von Beeck. In Augsburg, Nanette participated in concerts as a pianist, sometimes with her friend Nanette von Schaden. In 1787 she participated in the concert as well as a singer. However, she had to give up vocals because of ill health. After the death of her father on February 29, 1792, she independently continued to work in the piano workshop. In 1793, Naneta married the musician Johann Andreas Streicher (Johann Andreas Streicher, 1761-1833) and the following year moved with him to Vienna. She satiated the work of her father and first led it along with her younger brother Matthias Andreas Stein (Matthias Andreas Stein, 1776-1842). Since 1802, the workshop worked under her own name. With the support of her husband, and then the son of Johann Baptist (as a partner in the business in 1824-25), she became a famous and significant piano producer. Johann Baptist was the sole owner of the factory, which under his leadership received many patents and became famous throughout the world. In 1896, the factory was sold to the Stingl brothers. Nanetta and Andreas Streicher were not only piano makers. Nanetta was organizing concerts that played an important role in the musical life of Vienna. First, concerts were held in the house of Nanetta, then, since 1812, in the piano salon she created, in which all conditions for young artists were created. Streicher friends and buyers included Ludwig van Beethoven and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.
Naneta Streicher occasionally performed for friends and visitors from the circle of musicians, sometimes together with her daughter Sophie, an equally gifted pianist. Among her friends were many prominent musicians of Vienna.
Naneta Streicher died on January 16, 1833 after a two-month illness.
