History
The title of Baron Middleton was created on January 1, 1712 for Sir Thomas Willowby, 2nd Baronet (1670-1729). He previously represented Nottinghamshire (1698-1702, 1705-1710) and Newark (1710-1711) in the House of Commons. The title of Baronet Willoughby of Wollaton in the county of Nottinghamshire in the Baronet of England was created in 1677 for Sir Francis Willowby (1668-1688), elder brother of Thomas Willoughby. In 1688, after the death of his brother Francis, Thomas Willoughby inherited the title of 2nd baronet. He was succeeded in 1729 by his eldest son, Francis Willoughby, 2nd Baron Middleton (1692-1758). He sat in the House of Commons from Nottinghamshire (1713–1722) and Tamworth (1722–1727). After the death in 1781 of his youngest son, Thomas Willoughby, 4th Baron Middleton (1728-1781), the line of the 1st Baron Middleton was interrupted. He was succeeded by his cousin, Henry Willoughby, 5th Baron Middleton (1726-1800). He was the son of the Honorable Thomas Willoughby (c. 1694-1742), the second son of the 1st Baron. In 1835, after the death of his son, Henry Willoughby, 6th Baron Middleton (1761–1835), this branch of the family also died out.
His cousin , Digby Willoughby, 7th Baron Middleton (1769-1856) , succeeded the deceased Baron in 1835 . He was the youngest son of the Honorable Thomas Willoughby, the second son of the 1st Baron Middleton. 7th Lord had the rank of captain of the British Navy. After the death of the childless Digby Willoughby, the title passed to his cousin, Henry Willoughby, the 8th Lord Middleton (1817-1877). He was the grandson of the Rev. the Honorable James Willoughby, the youngest son of the Honorable Thomas Willoughby, the second son of the 1st Baron Middleton. He was replaced by his eldest son, Digby Wentworth Bayard Willoughby, 9th Baron Middleton (1844-1922), and he was succeeded by his younger brother, Godfrey Willowby, 10th Baron Middleton (1847-1924). After the death of the latter, his second son, Michael Guy Percival Willoughby, the 11th Baron Middleton (1887–1970) received the title. He served as Lord Lieutenant of East Yorkshire (1936–1968). In 2011, the title holder was his grandson, Michael Charles James Willoughby, 13th Baron Middleton (born 1948), who replaced his father in 2011 .
The Barons Middleton owned the Hallaton Hall , a stately home near Nottingham , and Middleton Hall in Warwickshire . In the 1920s, the 11th Baron Middleton sold these houses. Currently, the family nest is Birdsall Hall in the vicinity of Malton in North Yorkshire .
