History

The company was founded in April 1946 by the four Casio brothers: Toshio, Kazuo, Tadao and Yukio; their surname is traditionally transmitted in Latin as Kashio, but the brothers decided to simplify it in the name of the company to Casio [4] [5] .

After Tadao and his younger brothers saw an electric calculator at the First Business Exhibition in Ginza (Tokyo) in 1949, they decided to use the profits from the sales of the Yubiva ring-pipe, worn on a finger and allowing you to smoke a cigarette to the end, to developing their own calculator model. Most calculators of that time were controlled manually or using a motor ( arithmometer ). The Kashio brothers had some knowledge of electronics and decided to make a calculator that works using solenoids . The first working sample was completed by 1954. It was the first Japanese electromechanical calculator. In 1957, the Model 14 — A calculator was introduced, the world's first all-electric compact calculator based on relay technology and sold for 485,000 yen. In the same year, Casio Computer Co., Ltd [4] [5] was formed .

1965 - the year the Casio 001 desktop electronic calculator was released [5] . This was preceded by a small crisis in which the company found itself after it failed to respond in time to changes in the market for calculators, in which models operating on transistors changed models to relays, however, the Casio model became the world's first electronic calculator with memory. Calculators were originally sold in Japan, but since 1970, Casio and other Japanese electronics manufacturers have begun active expansion into the fast-growing US market. By the 1980s, Japan had become the largest exporter of electronics, and the United States - its largest importer, Casio and Sharp were the leaders in terms of calculators [4] . In 1972, the Casio Mini personal calculator was introduced, which was priced at 12,800 yen; About 10 million copies of this model were sold. Since 1970, the company's shares began to be listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange [6] .

Casio's activities were not limited to calculators. In 1974, the company developed the first watch with an eternal calendar called Casiotron, costing about 60,000 yen [6] . The advent of relatively cheap microcircuits in the late 1970s allowed Casio to begin the development of yet another direction - electronic musical instruments. In 1980, the company introduced the first musical instrument of its own production, the Casiotone digital piano , to the American market; by the end of the 1980s, Casio's market share was 55%. In 1990, in Tijuana (Mexico) and San Diego (California, USA), factories were opened, engaged only in the production of electronic musical instruments [4] .

In 1983, one of the most notable events in the history of Casio happened - the first G-Shock watches were presented to the public. The concept team was formed in 1981, and the creation and testing of all prototypes took about two years. At the very beginning of the work, the designers were given the task called the “rule of three dozen” - firstly, the watch had to withstand a drop from a height of 10 meters, secondly, withstand a pressure of 10 bar , and thirdly, it worked continuously for 10 years on one battery charge. For the entire test period, about 200 samples were tested. None of them came under the "rule of three dozen" completely. And so, when it was already necessary to write a report on the reasons for the failure, the head of the design team, Ibe, went to the park for a few minutes to collect his thoughts and finish the report on the reasons for the failure. But suddenly he saw a little girl throw a ball on a track and catch him. And the idea came to him - why not immerse the watch module in a protective shell - a kind of ball? So the first G-Shock watches were released. The prototypes of already finished watches were tested, which pass the details of motorcycle engines. At the 1983 presentation itself, to show all the features of the watch, Ibe threw them across the entire hall, dropped them, stood on them. The first production model was a Casio G-Shock DW-5000C. Then came a watch with built-in pressure, temperature and compass sensors. In 1985, Casio Pela watches were released, their key feature was a thickness of only 3.9 mm and a record low weight of 12 grams, which was achieved by the fact that the strap and case of these watches were a single unit.

In 1991, Casio acquired a stake in Asahi Corporation, a manufacturer of electronics (calculators, answering machines), and, together with Tandy Corporation, began to develop a line of personal digital assistants (PDAs), handheld computers with the ability to interact with conventional computers. The appreciation of the yen in the 1980s and 1990s forced Casio, like other Japanese companies, to move production facilities abroad. By 1996, 80% of Casio products were manufactured outside of Japan (in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Korea, China, India, the USA and Mexico) [4] .

Casio intends to launch the production of smart watches in the price category of about $ 400. The beginning of sales is expected in the spring of 2016 in the USA and Japan [7] .

In July 2015, Casio launched sales of new wrist watches compatible with the iPhone. For data exchange, Edifice EQB-510 devices are synchronized with a smartphone via Bluetooth 4.0 [8] .
