Refers to open beginnings . A little-explored debut rarely found in grandmaster tournaments. In the XX century, the central countergambit was included in the debut repertoire of Grandmaster A. Lutikov [1] .
Debut Ideas
2. 2. d7-d5, Black counterattacks the white pawn, at the same time revealing the lines of the queen and both bishops, which allows them to quickly connect them to the game in the future.
Many theorists [2] [3] are critical of Black’s second move, considering it insufficient for the equation of the game, as a result of which White gets a better position. Other chess researchers ( D.I. Bronstein , for example), on the contrary, view this opening positively, since it leads to a two-edged game, during which non-standard positions may appear that are unfamiliar to a less experienced opponent, which gives Black a good chance of success.
Debut Title
In a number of foreign languages, the beginning was given the name "Gambit of an elephant" ( English Elephant Gambit , French. Gambit éléphant , Polish. Gambit słonia , etc.), and the debut is not named after a chess piece , but in honor of the animal of the same name . The alternative name is Englund’s Counterattack. In Russian-language literature there are various approaches to the name of the debut. So, in the recent past, the debut was often considered without a name as an incorrect defense against the debut of the royal horse [2] . In other, including modern sources, the following names are used: “Central countergambit” [4] [5] , “Counterattack 2. ... d5” [6] , “Gambit of the black queen pawn” [7] , “Gambit of the elephant” [8 ] .
