Biography

Pavel Pravoslavlev was born on October 4 (16), 1873 in the village of Rakhinka (now Sredneahtubinsk district of the Volgograd region ) [2] in the family of a priest. He graduated from Astrakhan Theological Seminary [3] . He entered the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics at the University of Warsaw (Department of Natural Sciences). After graduating from the university in 1898, he remained at the Department of Geology as a scholarship holder with Professor V.P. Amalitsky , was a laboratory assistant at the geological office. In the years 1906-1908 he traveled with a business trip to Germany, Austria, Switzerland and France. In 1909, at the University of Warsaw he defended his thesis for a master's degree in mineralogy and geognosy on the topic “Materials for the knowledge of the Lower Volga Caspian deposits”, after which he was appointed professor of geology at the Don Polytechnic Institute [4] in Novocherkassk . From 1913 to 1924 - professor at the Military Medical Academy in Petrograd [2] . Since 1924 - Head of the Department of Historical Geology at Leningrad University [4] . In 1934, the Higher Attestation Commission approved Pravoslavtseva to the degree of Doctor of Geology and Mineralogy without defending a dissertation.

He died on October 12, 1941 in the besieged Leningrad [2] [5] . He was buried at the Shuvalovsky cemetery [3] .

Pravoslavlev studied mainly the geology of the Volga region and the Caspian region . He studied the stratigraphy of the upper tertiary and post-tertiary deposits [2] . He described a number of Paleozoic vertebrates and Neogene mollusks. Published 59 scientific papers [3] .

Orthodoxy

In honor of P. A. Pravoslavlev, a fossil animal of Orthodoxy was named [6] - a small gorgonops from the Late Permian of the Arkhangelsk region. Described by Pravoslavlev in 1927 as a species of foreigners and singled out as a separate genus in 1953.
