Flavian II (Patriarch of Antioch)

Patriarch Flavian II ( Greek Πατριάρχης Φλαβιανός Β ; died 518 , Peter ) - Patriarch of Antioch (498-512).

During his time in the eastern church there was a fierce struggle between the Nestorians and the Euthyans , and the authority of the decisions of the Council of Chalcedon was questioned. Emperor Anastasius I favored the Euthyans, but Flavian, becoming a patriarch, began to speak out against them. Bishop Xeri of Hierapolis accused him of indulging the Nestorians. Flavian anathematized Nestorius and his teachings. Xenay made new demands: Flavian was to anathematize Diodorus of Tarsus , Theodore of Mopsuest and Theodore of Cyrus and reject the decision of the Council of Chalcedon. Flavian fulfilled the first requirement, but did not agree to the second. Then some churches in Asia Minor refused to communicate with the Church of Antioch .

In 510, a cathedral gathered in Sidon , cursing the Cathedral of Chalcedon and deposing its defenders. After that, a crowd of monks came to Antioch with loud curses against Flavian. For him stood the population of Antioch and another crowd of monks who had come from Koilesia. A skirmish has occurred. The emperor took this opportunity to remove Flavian, who was removed to Petra . On the patriarchal throne, Flavian was replaced by the myaphysite Sevir .

Saint Flavian died in Peter around 518 . It is revered by the Orthodox saints (commemorated July 20 ( August 2 )) and the Catholic (commemorated July 4) churches.
