National Legion of Decency

The National Legion of Decency ( eng. National Legion of Decency ), formerly the Catholic Legion of Decency ( eng. Catholic Legion of Decency , CLOD)) is an organization operating in the USA in the 20th century , the main activity of which was the detection and fight against undesirable (from the point of Roman Catholic Church ) content in the cinema .

Established in 1933 by the Catholic Bishop of Cincinnati, John McNicholas . The organization from the very beginning included not only Catholics, but also a number of Protestants and even Jews, as a result of which in April 1934 it was renamed the National Legion of Decency.

The rating assigned by the Legion to one or another picture played a certain role in its rolling fate. At the same time, the Legion often spoke from a more conservative position than the American Association of Film Companies (see the Hayes Code ).

By the 1960s, only Catholics participated in the organization. In 1966, it was renamed the National Catholic Office for Motion Pictures , the successor to which is currently the US Catholic Bishops Conference Service for Film and Broadcasting in ( English United States Conference of Catholic Bishops' Office for Film and Broadcasting ).
