Defender ( Concussion ) is an American biopic directed by Peter Landesman and starring Will Smith . Development
The idea of Ridley Scott to make a film about the concussions of football players appeared after becoming acquainted with the research of Dr. Bennett Omalu about former NFL stars Junior See and Dave Dewerson, who committed suicide because of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (HTE). Scott was set to directing after his film “ Exodus: Kings and Gods, ” while he and producer Jannina Fazio found a screenwriter [7] . In November – December 2013, two more films about concussions in NFL players were in development: “Playtime Solution” with scriptwriter, director and former participant in NFL training camp Matthew A. Cherry and actor Isaiah Washington [8] and “League of Negation” produced by Walter F. Parks and Laurie MacDonald [9] . Landesmann wrote his script based on the 2009 article in GQ magazine Game Brain by Jeanne Marie Laskas [10] . Smith and Marsan previously worked together in 2008 in the superhero movie " Hancock ." The film received $ 14.4 million in fiscal deductions from Pennsylvania.
Shooting
The main shooting began on October 27, 2014 in Pittsburgh and continued there until mid-January. One of the key scenes of the film was filmed at Altius Restaurant in Pittsburgh.
