The basketball player of the year of the Big 12 Conference ( English Big 12 Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Year ) is an annual basketball award given by voting to the best basketball player among the students of the Big 12 conference , which is part of the first division of the NCAA . Voting is conducted among the head coaches of the teams participating in the conference (there are currently ten), in addition, the coaches give their votes after the regular season ends, but before the start of the playoff tournament, that is, at the very beginning of March, and they cannot vote for their own players. The award was established and first presented to Tameke Dixon of the University of Kansas in the 1996/97 season, three years after the conference was officially formed (February 25, 1994).

Despite the fact that the conference is called Big 12 (initially it consisted of 12 teams), it consists of only ten teams, after leaving the University of Nebraska in Lincoln and the University of Colorado in Boulder in 2011, and in 2012 - the University of Missouri and University of Texas A&M . Also in 2012, Texas Christian University and the University of West Virginia were included in it. The Big 12 conference should not be confused with the Big Ten conference , which currently consists of twelve teams and represents a completely different region of the country .
Four players, Stacy Dales , Nicole Odi , Courtney Paris and Brittney Greiner , received this prize several times, however only Paris and Greiner won it three times. Most often, the winners of this award were basketball players at Baylor University (7 times) and the University of Oklahoma (6 times).
