Biography
Born into a Jewish family. In 1924 he moved to Belgium with his parents. During his studies, he was hardly given the French language . He studied at the University of Brussels . In 1939 received Belgian citizenship.
During the Second World War, all the closest members of his family were sent to the Auschwitz concentration camp , where they died.
He changed many professions. In many ways, the novels “Useless Learning” (“L 'apprentissage inutile”, 1948) and “Deaf Time” (“La contre-saison”, 1966), which he created in the spirit of critical realism, are largely autobiographical. The novels The Coup d'état (Le coup d'état, 1950) and The Ailment of Dr. Lorei (Le mal du docteur Laureys, 1962) are a sharp satire on philistinism , on the bourgeois world order.
The novel “The Long-Eared Flemish” (Le Flamand aux longues oreilles, 1959; Russian translation entitled “Feast of Klok-Long Ears”, 1966) is dedicated to the Resistance Movement. It is written in the tradition of S. De Coster Legends of Ulenspiegel .
Scheinert's poetic work is connected with the folk song tradition: collections of poems “And the Light Sang” (“Et la lumière chanta”, 1954), “One rose for a dozen thorns” (“Une rose pour dix épines”, 1968), etc.
Scheinert is the author of the collection of short stories “Although the Earth is Round” (Bien que la terre soit ronde, 1950), the critical essays Belgian Writers in the Face of Reality (Ecrivains beiges devant la réalité, 1964), and the philosophical drama The Man Who went to Getterwald "(1970), the play" Legs "about the Resistance Movement and the anti-fascist satire" Dead Fish "(both - 1973).
Founder of the literary group Roman (1964).
Winner of several literary prizes.
