- January 1 - terrorist attack at the Tretyakovskaya station of the Moscow metro. 3 people were injured.
- January 28 - Sofia metro opened . The first section with 5 stations:

- May 24 - opening of the Universität - Altenessen section (2.5 km) of the Essen Underground
- May 26 - Warsaw Metro station “ Centrum ” ( Polish Centrum ) (A-13) opened.
- August 31 - the “eastern” branch of Helsinki Metro Line 1 with three stations was opened:
